The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most popular professional football teams in the NFL, and for good reason, too; with a long list of hall-of-famers, winning Superbowl appearances, as well as being the oldest professional football team on the American Football Conference roster, this family-owned team still maintains a strong presence in American football culture today, thanks in part to their Steeler Nation fan club.

About the Pittsburgh Steelers

The large fan base and popularity that the Pittsburgh Steelers enjoy today encompasses a long and storied history spanning much of the 20th century. Many sports fans who take to ordering Pittsburgh Steelers checks may be familiar with the history that this landmark NFL team has garnered throughout the years, but sports fans just getting into looking for their favorite teams may be at a loss to knowing about it.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got their start in 1933, and were first known as the Pittsburgh Pirates. They had their first match against the New York Giants, but lost with by a landslide 23 to 2 by the end of the game. The Pittsburgh Pirates never ranked higher than second place in their own division. The Pittsburgh Pirates maintained a low profile before renaming their team to the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to the 1940 NFL season.

People may also be familiar with their history during the tough times of World War II; player shortages and other setbacks eventually led to a partnership with the Philadelphia Eagles, and were colloquially known as the “Steagles” and “Phil-Pitt Eagles” at the time. They also merged with the Chicago Cardinals for a period in 1944, giving them the nicknames “Card-Pitt” or the back-handed “Carpets.”

Despite making the playoffs for their very first time in 1947, the Pittsburgh Steelers did not win, and didn’t even make it back to the playoffs for the next 25 years to come.

Despite the rough 1940?s seasons, the Steelers had still managed to get some of their players recognized by the NFL. Bill Dudley was recognized as a league MVP in 1946, and was awarded the Joe F. Carr Trophy. He also happened to be the last recipient for this trophy, as they stopped giving this award in the years following Carr’s retirement.

People may also be familiar with Terry Bradshaw, another Steeler who was the League MVP of 1978. His physical prowess and leadership skills led the Pittsburgh Steelers to win four Super Bowls, also making him one of the most renowned players in the NFL. This former Steeler also made the Pro Football Hall of Fame as soon as he was made eligible for it.
